CARNIVAL AND BACHANNAL IS THE BIGGEST NEW AGE ZEITGEIST OF CARIBBEAN LIVING

Every year we 'tek on di road' for our overdose of 'wukking' and 'whinin', here's why we're so obsessed with carnival time.

"PEOPLE ARE YOU READY???"

After a 1,2,3 countdown we all begin to jump and whine in a fenzy with our cups filled with alcohol and our foreheads of sweat,It's carnival time. Unlike reggae music Soca or for long; 'The Soul Of Calypso' is the subcultured musical genre that originated out of Trinidad and Tobago in the 70's. Once the millenial generation got hold of Soca in the 2000's the genre fast became a lucrative sonic industry fruiting soca superstars near big as reggae acts. In Jamaica, soca/carnival is big business. Every year 'Mas Camp' fills up to it's seams with revellers on ytheir 'worst behavior'. For me personally carnival is the ultimate LET GO time filled with the spirit of freedom and carelessness and I LOVE IT!

I am still fairly a soca newbie having only just attended my first mas and road march this year. What I mostly remember is the pain in my hips the week after as a result of me whining in the middle of the road like never before. Soca music has a way of lifting you up and slamming you atop your inhibitions and pride leaving you with no option but surrendering to the rhthyms of soca royalties Destra, Bunji Garlin, Kes, Machel and the lot of them.

Breaking my road march virginity with the best whinin crew of ladies

While I enjoy getting super liquered up on premium mixes and energy drinks and whining until the sun comes up what I love most about carnival and soca is the sense of entitlement it brings. It tells me I'm not just Jamaican but I am a Caribbean citezen and true West Indian, my proof? the oil in my waist and the familiarity all soca songs have to my ears. It's with that natural aapporach I have taken on my foray into the socasize nation. Now, who else is itching for Carinval 2015?
